What is Domino?

domino

Domino is a tile-based game. Its rectangular tiles have two square ends, each marked with a number of spots. The aim of the game is to place the tiles in the correct order to create a winning hand. The first player to reach 20 spots wins. This game is played with two players.

Origins

The origins of domino are unclear, but they are likely ancient. Some historians have discovered evidence tying the game to the period between 181 and 234 CE. The game is now most popular in Latin America.

Variants

There are several different types of domino games. The simplest is the block game. This is a two-player game in which each player draws seven tiles from a double-six set. The player with the lowest number of pip spots at the end of his hand is the winner.

Rules

The basic rules of domino are simple and easy to learn. The objective of the game is to make cells, or spaces, by matching two of the same tiles. Each cell scores one point for the player who creates it. Blank tiles, or trumps, are used in certain situations and are wild cards.

Sets

Sets of dominoes are a powerful way to teach a variety of mathematical concepts. Using different sets of dominoes, students can practice matching numerals and patterns, tiling rectangles, and other concepts. These games are also effective for teaching strategy.

Spinners

Spinners are a part of domino sets. They are small pins on the face of each domino. This helps keep the domino in place during shuffle. Players can remove the spinners and replace them with another piece of domino if they want.

Languages supported

The new version of Domino includes support for the JavaScript programming language. It enables developers to insert JavaScript code in between HTML content and tags. It requires a learning curve, as it is not a standard programming language. However, IBM/Lotus began to expand JavaScript support with Domino R5 and it is now widely used.
